Wears Valley
Farmers Market started as a humble pull-behind trailer.
Having more than 30 years' experience in produce, Roger Meiers
and his family were able to quickly establish a reputation of
delivering high-quality product at better-than-market prices. Additionally,
his high standard or exceptional customer service has earned him
many loyal, regular customers here in the Valley. The
Market, as a result, has been able to expand both in capacity
and products offered. In fact, many out-of-state customers
have returned and commented on how we have expanded in such a
little time, and compliments are frequently received on how attractively
the product is displayed.
Fresh local produce is the staple of the Market. Sometimes,
however, to ensure a varied selection is available, produce must
be brought in from other-than-local sources. While
this product isn't local, it is still the freshest available because
of daily replenishments. All produce, regardless of its
origin, must meet strict quality requirements. The
extra effort it takes to keep the shelves stocked with a wide
selection of fresh produce seems to be enjoyed by the customers,
as many frequently comment about the great quality and delicious
taste of the produce we offer!
However, the Market doesn't offer just produce. Jams
and jellies, pickles and relishes, sorghum and honey are offered
as well. Sourwood honey is the most popular seller
and the one that is principally stocked on our shelves. This
comes from the Sourwood tree, which is indigenous to this area. This
honey is sought after worldwide, and commands a premium price
in local markets. Contrary to the sound of its name,
this honey is not sour, but just a little less sweet. Both
strained and with-the-comb varieties are available. Harvested
locally, it is a favorite of many locals and visitors alike. Sorghum
is also available when in season.
And what produce stand would be complete without peanuts? Here
at the Market, we have both boiled and fried (yes, fried!). Most
customers liken the taste of the shelled fried nuts to parched
peanuts; however, the intention of the fried peanut is to eat
it in the shell (yes, in the shell!). The cooking process
alters the texture of the shell so that the peanut can be consumed
whole, eliminating the need to shell the nut, and adding a crispy
element as well. Shell or no shell, these peanuts are
undoubtedly hard to resist! Boiled peanuts are a Southern
favorite. Samples of both are always available. Just
stop in and ask!
There are also some great souvenir items here at the Market. While
the selection sometimes varies, most often there are plenty of
wooden novelties. Birdhouses, walking sticks, wind
chimes and wooden figurines are representative of the normal selection.
With the addition of booths available for rent all season long
to arts and crafts vendors, the variety of items available increases!
New this season, the "Smokin' Pig Barbecue" is offering
mouth-watering barbecue, as well as tasty side items and ice-cold
fountain drinks. Pulled pork sandwiches, barbecued
ribs and chicken quarters as well as the familiar hot dogs and
sausage are available meat entrees. Home made potato
salad, bean salad, baked beans, and corn-on-the-cob on the side,
with strawberry shortcake or ice cream for dessert make a delicious
meal choice. There are a few picnic tables located
on-site where customers can enjoy their meal and look over the
beautiful mountains that are the backdrop of the Market's location.
Seasonal items are also brought in throughout the year. October
brings the large pumpkins and curious gourds, as well as other
interesting decorating items. Many visitors stop just
to have their picture taken on a huge pumpkin! It never
fails to be an interesting display in the Fall.
Of course, the whole reason the Market exists is to serve the
customers. All our staff enjoy working with the public
and with their product. It is our desire to deliver
the best customer service and to be as helpful as possible. We
strive to be knowledgeable about our products in general so we
can be confident in advising on topics such as how long a product
will last (for example, vegetables or boiled peanuts), care instructions
(for example, flowers), and how a product tastes or what are its
best uses (for example, apples). Regardless of what
you purchase, we want you to feel like you are getting individual
attention. Customers have to eat - we have a great product
- but we want you to come back because of the exceptional service!
We look forward to seeing you soon!
